I am deconstructing and reconstructing them in my own way (mainly by editing short pieces into loops and contructing them in layers). The digital editing and processing transforms the rehearsals into a new visual-musical work that is presented to the viewer via 4 television screens, located as an alternative to a human orchestra. The new piece is inspired by the traditional classical concert experience and is constructed from acoustic instruments. The two mediums, music and video, support each other so that a new and a special relationship develops between the sounds and the visual images. The orchestration exists also between the monitors that function as musicians in a quartet.<br /><br />The viewers don’t experience the acoustic sound as produced by man, but are exposed to digitalized and manipulated materials which are presented through monitors and sound systems. In the classical concert the musician produces acoustic sounds through instruments which are manufactured according to a long lasting tradition. In contrast, in the video concert the images are only representations that lose their concrete quality, and the sounds which are processed by a computer lose their authenticity. Nevertheless, the new sounds and compositions are real and perceptible and are mentally effective just like any sound manufactured by a conventional orchestra. This way, the composition echoes classical traditions with a feeling of alienation and the feeling of loss as well.<br /><br />The camera that documents the live musicians playing during the concert rehearsals is static, so that the frame is set and only the musical instruments and musicians are moving. The camera sets the bounds of the compositions and the musicians set the movement in space. As a result the viewer’s experience is one of harmony between the movement in the frame and the sounds played at the same moment. However, the sound that is recorded by the camera is the sound constructed by the sum of the sounds from all the playing instruments at the same moments and background sounds as well. The visual correlation between the images and the sounds is a result of the use of looping.<br />In addition, in the rehearsal there’s a mood of practice, forgivingness toward mistakes and lack of control. As a result of this atmosphere, sounds that were not produced by the instruments are added to the recording (for example, a screech of a chair, talking, the instructions of the conductor etc..). The Siamese creature as an “unfinished” creature, incomplete and yet double, contains in its body, in the conjunction of the two, the intermediate place I wish to explore. The connection as a place.<br />The representation of Siamese twins throughout history was done through catalogic-scientific photography, which treats the case as a phenomenon, an object for research. The characterization of the Siamese creature as an object associated it in my mind with the double furniture – a very common artifact in the history of design.<br /><br />Armchairs with two or three joined seats, a table which unfolds into two or a double bookcase conjoined back to back. Alongside the group of Siamese objects there is also a different kind of double objects, which amalgamate two distinguished forms that meet in a meaningful defining connecting point.The search is done in a technique of quick painting over a “deep” white surface,which brings to mind the endless background in photographs for catalogues. The white of the background is not only a suggestion of a place, it itself is that in-between: a blind place, deep and flat at the same time, which has no interest in being unequivocal. These are territories characterized as stain and lump which are in constant struggle with the image that is coming into existence.<br /><br />The iron sculptures are a plastic comment of the Israeli reality, expressing itself through the architectonic elements that relate to the landscape, and exhibit romantic and critical threads at the same time. While making a dialogue with the sculptural language of minimalism, the figurative body manifests itself through imprints of the human and physical being. The sculptures define the body and the landscape and create power relations between them; at times by subtle action when the massive iron is handled as if delicately folding paper.<br /><br />The image of the mountain is present and central to my projects. The representation of the landscape is flat - one dimensional -becoming the echo of itself in its sculptural existence in both drawings and video works. The flatness is looking to erase the inherent sculptural being of the material as volumetric mass, transforming and leaving it behind as a trace of a visual mass.<br /><br />The drawings are mostly made with carbon copy paper and ink. They describe the connections between reality sites and stains that threaten to cover them. The drawing line moves between intention – the one that controls and copies – and unselfconsciousness.<br /><br />In my works, I use motifs relating to power, jostling, territorial control and ostentation. Taiwan faces the mighty force from across the Strait; to me, what comes from this intense rivalry atmosphere is a happy, cute, and sexy party action. Present day mass media has consumed war into spectacular stunned scenes, giving people a series of illusions and fantasies.<br /><br />Consequently, I choose war as my main theme in order to represent the chaos in today’s media society. Executing by ways of animation or comics, I transform the war weapon to become a pun of killing device and fierce animal. I wish to represent the weapon as animalistic and show that the war is full of irony. This distance exists ambiguously; it’s like a layer of membrane, with thickness, texture, and occupies a space. Within this distance, I look for the relations between human and images, traveling against the grain and not going with the flow.</span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:100%;"><br /><br />When images occupy the everyday feeling and memory, and while every story could be imagined by flowing images, images have already thrust into us with full force and changed the bodily senses. With human living within the surroundings of digital media, the body becomes mechanical, and the possibility of the identity mobility increases in everyday life. Ever since the surgery I started having symptoms such as slower pupil reactions, discomforts around the eyes, blurred and doubled visions, sensitive to lights, worsen judgements on space and distance etc. In the following six months, with these symptoms continued to be unstable, I started to avoid clarity, the more I desire to see better the more obvious it becomes where the boundary to blurriness is drawn.<span style=""> </span><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;font-family:times new roman;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:100%;"><o:p></o:p>This series of work</span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-size:100%;"> was taken at night in rural places in the city such as huge wastelands, football stadium by the park, racing tracks and under-constructed building sites. By making further adjustments and changes to the images, an even more unfamiliar scenery was created, it did not objectively and truthfully represent what I have seen and instead, my body senses (physical disabilities) were transformed on to these images, as if the machine was possessed by my body. In the softened beam of light, this silent and settled land is the body that cannot be entered.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;font-family:times new roman;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:100%;"><o:p> </o:p>These imaginary visions of sceneries </span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-size:100%;">were once moving images – I was floating in the absolute darkness and right in front of me there was a ring of faint light shinning on a flat and smooth patch of green, slowly and gradually I moved towards the ring of light, closer and closer, the darkness revolved around me quietly like waves. As I was moving foreword, the patch of green beneath me went infinitely into the opposite direction with the beam of lights.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;font-family:times new roman;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:100%;"><o:p> </o:p>What differentiates </span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-size:100%;">o</span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:100%;">utland </span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-size:100%;">from</span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:100%;"> border and frontier is that the location is </span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-size:100%;">pointed out</span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:100%;"> more obvious</span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-size:100%;">ly</span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:100%;"> with the word out, corresponding a relative relationship between the exterior and the interior of a central point. 攤開世界地圖,緯度相近的台灣與以色列分據著亞洲大陸東西兩方的邊緣之境。兩者位處亞洲兩側邊的地理之位的姿態彷若(括號)作用,框括著亞</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;" class="a"><span style="">洲的疆界範圍,也括明了中心就在括號之中;中心與邊緣是一種互為互恃的作用狀態,也即是中心依憑邊緣而確立為中心之姿;反之,邊境不僅僅只是單元中心的邊緣,它亦是此處與彼處之間的中介位置與狀態,看似兩者的邊緣,更也是兩造交集之所在,因然地邊陲與中心始有一種反轉的態勢。以色列既臨亞洲西側邊境也近鄰歐陸,它身處歐亞的激鋒交界之處;而台灣不僅列處東亞門戶之位,也服贗太平洋區域另一側的權力中心,它是東亞勢力與太平洋彼端權力推移交鋒的中介之地。邊陲之境往往因地理情勢開啟更加複雜繁詭的政治樣態,因此可這麼說,以色列與台灣皆處於一種例外狀態(</span><span style="" lang="EN-US">state of exception</span><span style="">):主體的認同與整體性格態度乃是相當游牧、漂移,以及由此而生的去中心覺知。</span><span style="" lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="a" style=""><span style="" lang="EN-US"><o:p> </o:p></span></p> <p class="a" style=""><span style="" lang="EN-US">●</span><span style="">亞細亞的孤兒</span><span style="" lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="a" style=""><span style=""> 吳濁流《亞細亞的孤兒》一書堪能表識台灣人的處境,以及身分模糊與迷失的狀態。書中主角胡太明為台灣日治時期下受過高等教育的知識份子,因政治現實因素而致使自我認同及歸屬感寄寓於統政的日本和血緣文化地理皆相近的中國之上,縱使胡太明能言能書,但遊走兩大國之間卻仍無法獲得任一方的接納認可,終致自我價值崩潰引爆精神狀態的瘋癲。主角的失心瘋喻指了台灣認同主體浮移失根的意識狀態,此等潛意識驅策著我們不停地覓尋懸缺的母親的懷抱,所謂光復大陸失土(西側中心)、返聯入聯(東側中心)這些不同時代的政治操作已不僅是關乎統政議題,它們乃是更為深層的集體潛意識對母親懷抱嚮往的徵候。中心之於台灣,不但在想像層域中扮演著被慾望的母親的角色,同時也化身為嚴厲的父法,欲望對象一體雙面的擬像不僅迴向映照至主體自身之上,也內爆出主體最本真的精神分裂狀態。</span><span style="">愛與黑暗之間的掙扎</span><span style="" lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="a" style=""><span style=""> 備受國際矚目的以色列文學作家阿摩司.奧茲(</span><span style="" lang="EN-US">Amos Oz</span><span style="">)在自傳體長篇小說《愛與黑暗的故事》不僅撰寫了一個以色列家庭的日常生活,也娓娓鋪展出百年來一個猶太家族的歷史與民族敘事,以第一人稱「我」為出發,從祖父輩流亡歐洲的動盪人生、移居巴勒斯坦地區後的艱辛生計,到英國託管時期耶路撒冷的生活習俗、以色列建國初期面臨的各種挑戰、形形色色猶太文化人的心態、學術界的勾心鬥角、鄰近阿拉伯人的命運、大屠殺悻存者和移民的際遇、到猶太復國主義先驅者和拓荒者種種的奮鬥歷程。奧茲說:「整個猶太人的歷史,就是一部愛與黑暗的歷史。在漫長的歲月裡,我們沒有自己的家園、沒有自己的語言、沒有安全感。《愛與黑暗的故事》寫的是猶太人如何回到家園的故事,也是猶太民族的夢想變為現實的故事。但事實上,夢想和現實之間依然有很大的距離,因此,我的故事也在悲劇和喜劇間徘徊。」</span><span 以色列最初是指一個民族而非地名,在過去三千年的歷史中,猶太人視以色列為自己的民族和精神生活的核心,稱之為「聖地」或「應許之地」,但經歷過亞述、巴比倫、波斯、希臘、羅馬、拜占庭等古國的統治,猶太人在這一地區逐漸衰落並遭驅逐。數個世紀以來,許許多多流亡海外的猶太人一直試圖返回以色列。</span><span style="" lang="EN-US">1896</span><span style="">年維也納記者和劇作家西奧多.赫茨爾發起錫安主義運動(又稱猶太復國主義運動),號召全世界猶太人回歸故土,經歷幾次大規模的回歸潮流後,</span><span style="" lang="EN-US">1948</span><span style="">年</span><span style="" lang="EN-US">5</span><span style="">月</span><span style="" lang="EN-US">14</span><span style="">日,在英國的託管期結束前一天,以色列國正式宣布成立,聯合國亦承認為會員國,這也是世界上唯一以猶太人為主體的國家。數千年來猶太人一再試圖回歸以色列的舉動,乃是對永恆歸返母體懷抱欲望的徵候表現,但主體卻在致使慾望實現與慾望永不可能被滿足之間不停輪迴,再加以他者的認可/排斥與主體自我認同間的相悖衝突,而迸裂出在愛與黑暗之間掙扎的邊緣性格。</span><span style="" 以色列與台灣兩者不但在交通路程相距甚遠,更因新聞、電影等以歐美西方為中心的傳媒訊息作用之下,雙方存在著比實際地理位置更遙遠的距離,中、英、美、法熟稔得好似街坊鄰居,而以色列之於台灣或者台灣之於以色列,倒像是世界盡頭般的彼處。換言之,在此處的我早習以為常地以一種冷調又陌生的旁觀者態度處理彼處的人事物:我只是冷眼旁觀著他的痛苦。因此可說彼處之於此處而言乃落在比邊境更邊陲的位置,也即是例外狀態不單只是邊緣之於中心的例外,還有邊境應照邊境更加例外的指涉。這等例外狀態的處境使得兩造彷如面鏡而對一般:我在鏡裡看見我,而鏡中之影卻又不能等同我,那也就是我在他身上看見我,但他並不是我(這「我」之主體位置可任意抽換成台灣或以色列),他之於我而言其實是最熟悉的陌生人。簡言之,台灣和以色列無論在宗教、種族、國情等方面是大相逕庭的,但政治現實激起的集體精神狀態、意識型態與性格反應卻是極為相似的,好比面鏡而照一般,也正是透過他者以及欲望的投射與反射,拉出永恆回返主體自身之內的廣裘視野。</span></p><p 總的而言,台灣與以色列的青年藝術家在作品的表現形式上仍不脫當代藝術的框範,或者可說都還是踏在西方領軍的藝術走勢之後,但兩地特殊的政治史地情狀確實涵養了藝術家創作的內容,成就了具辨識度的藝術表現的面貌與性格,這是彼此從相似處況的邊境他地,看清了自身的條件與發展性所在。同是邊境的兩者,透過彼此的相對看見了自己,恰如面鏡而照一般看透了我與他者。</span></p><p class="a"
